Uncertainty in Ecuador

The 2010 Ecuador crisis took place on September 30, 2010, when elements of the national police and military forces of Ecuador blockaded highways, occupied the National Parliament and Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito, and took over a major television station, TV Ecuador, in what they claimed were political protests against proposed cuts to their bonuses and benefits. After being attacked by the police, President Rafael Correa was taken to a hospital where he declared a state of emergency, referring to the events as an attempted coup d’état and attributing responsibility to the opposition. Clashes occurred between rebellious police forces and loyal army forces, who successfully rescued Correa after he had been held for 10 hours at the hospital. Unrest and looting had been reported around the country. The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero referred to the events as a coup d’état. The uprising left eight dead and 274 injured according Ecuador’s Health Minister.

As you can imagine, we were following the news closely on September 30, since we have so many friends in Ecuador.  We are thankful to hear from them that the situation has calmed down.  However, a crisis like this causes a lot of uncertainty, since people wonder what might happen next.  Please pray for the political situation in Ecuador and that our brothers and sisters in Christ will make the most of this opportunity to share the hope and security we have in Jesus Christ.

Thankful to God for answering our prayers…
